Embrace the Great Maine Outdoors

Little compares to the beauty and grandeur of mid-coastal Maine, and our Oakland House property is the perfect place to start embracing the outdoor lifestyle: take a bracing dip in the waters of Penobscot Bay from the Oakland House’s private bathing beach, launch a kayak, canoe or a board and paddle the coastline, hike the trails up to Lookout Rock for a sweeping view reaching to the Camden Hills.  Sail or motor among the islands, checking out the seal ledges just minutes away.  Bike the trails, play tennis.  Our concierge staff is ready to outfit your adventure!

Kayaking

We rent tandem and single ocean kayaks, life vests and paddles.  Guests can take self-guided trips that hug the coastline.  Prepare to glide past marine life and loons and spy eagles and osprey in the skies above.

Hiking

Explore our woodland and shorefront.  Request a map to our well-marked hiking trails that summit 250 feet above Eggemoggin Reach for a spectacular view of the bay and beyond.  Try to find the “fairy houses” enroute and perhaps bring a picnic to relax at the top.  Consider the expansive trails in nearby Blue Hill Mountain, Holbrook Island Sanctuary or Acadia National Park only an hour away.

Sailing

Temporarily unavailable.

Penobscot Bay is one of the choicest sailing destinations in the world.  Join the fun and arrange a trip aboard our Pearson Engine sailboat for a full or half-day charter, a captained excursion among the islands of Penobscot Bay.

Canoeing

Rent one of our two-person canoes to launch in the ocean or nearby Walker Pond.  We provide life vests.

Paddleboarding

Rent one of our sturdy stand-up paddleboards, for use in the ocean or nearby Walker Pond.  We provide life vests.

Boating

Temporarily unavailable.

Arrange a trip aboard our Boston Whaler for a tour of the many islands and seal ledges of Penobscot Bay including the legendary osprey nest off Great Spruce Head.  Share the waters with hard-working lobster boats and three-masted schooners.  The prettiest view of the Maine coast is from the ocean.

Swimming & Sunbathing

The Oakland House has two private ocean beaches with lovely views of the Deer Isle Bridge to the west and Pumpkin Island to the east. Most guests take a refreshing dip in the brisk waters of the Penobscot Bay at least once. Also a popular spot for exploring tidepools and watching the sun go down.

Tennis

Temporarily unavailable.

Nearby Robin Hood Camp makes available tennis courts, equipment – even a tennis professional for a workout or a lesson.

Fishing

We rent rods and tackle and can even arrange a guided fishing trip for half or full-day excursions to local ponds and river, by arrangement with an experienced guide.  You bring the camera!
